The Social Life: Where are you ladies from originally?
Elisa & Lily: “New York.”
TSL: We adore your unique way of educating your readers about the people you feature by focusing on their passion and inspiration, but where do you ladies turn to for inspiration?
E&L: “We are inspired by the people we feature, 100%. The inspiration is transformative, completely.”
TSL: What is the best part about working as a mother-daughter team?
E: “You get to work with a direct mirror of yourself.”
L: “There is no breaking the bond of what we’re doing. In a normal business partnership, there is fragility involved with getting into a fight. Being a mother-daughter, there is no tearing us apart. We have each other’s support in a secure way throughout all the trials and tribulations of having a startup.
TSL: Elisa, how do you feel your former work as a fashion editor has aided in the success of Style Like U?
E: “I have developed a very curated eye and an ability to pick out people that wear their clothes versus the clothes wearing them. I am extremely detailed oriented and can quickly decide on what goes up what doesn’t on the site. The years and years of experience in styling and editing has enabled us to have a more professional look from the get go.
Working as a stylist helped me know how to look for ‘what’s next’. I also worked with and was mentored by amazing people, in particular Mary Randoff of SELF Magazine and Diane Smith of Sports Illustrated. They both had a big influence on my career and on my life.”
TSL: Lily, are you still attending NYU? Have you ever thought about a Style Like U documentary??
L: “I have been going part time [to NYU] for over two years. As for a documentary, we kick ourselves in the foot for not filming the whole experience of Style Like U from day one. Regardless, the whole experience has been so unbelievable and magical.”
