IMG_9656I had the chance to sit down and chat with Anine Bing, the mother, blogger, designer and instagram royalty behind her eponymous label Anine Bing. Her line is an eclectic mix of bohemian and rock & roll, and has become a staple with some of our favourite tastemakers. Anine has grown an impressive following for not only her line, but on instagram, boasting nearly 200K followers. Anine was in town to celebrate the launch of her line at Holt Renfrew, where she is kept in good company with luxury labels like Prada, Gucci and Tom Ford to name a few. Check out our interview with the designer below.

IMG_9616JL: Your Brand has grown a lot in the last few years, what is it like being carried at Holt Renfrew, one of Canada’s most prestigious retailers?

AB: It’s Amazing! I’m super excited and proud to be here. I next to all these amazing brands and I’m honoured, it’s such a great store.

JL: When you started designing is there a girl you were designing for, and has she changed much from then to now?

AB: She is a girl who is comfortable in her own skin. She’s a creative one that likes to travel and explore the world. She’s very comfortable and confident with who she is and she likes to dress casual, with a rock & roll bohemian twist.

IMG_9630JL: Is there a celebrity or tastemaker that you would love to get into your line that hasn’t worn your line yet?

AB: Kate Moss.

IMG_9627JL: As of right now your line focuses on women, which is  doing exceptionally well. Would you consider doing a mens capsule?

AB: One day maybe, right now I’m so busy with this. Right now I’m kind of selfish and want to design for myself. But I would want you to wear my stuff, so maybe one day I’ll do a mens collection.

JL: I would LOVE to wear your designs!

IMG_9636JL: If you could collaborate with another designer or artist, who would you collaborate with?

AB: That’s a tricky one, theres too many to choose just one!

IMG_9631JL: Did you find it hard going from modelling to designing your line?

AB: No, I took advantage of it! I was in the modelling business for ten years, I learned a lot from travelling and meeting all these talented people in the fashion industry, photographers, stylists, so I just tried to learn as much as I could.

IMG_9641JL: where do you see your line going in the next five years?

AB: I see it expanding, I’m constantly adding new styles and I just added some amazing handbags. I have a lot of plans, and a lot of new categories I’m planning to add. I can’t tell you everything right now, but good things.

IMG_9643JL: You manage to run a wildly successful fashion line, a popular blog and a family, what is your secret to making it all work?

AB: Hard work, and by loving what I’m doing. It’s a lifestyle, not a job. When the kids are put to bed at night, I stay up and work. I have a fantastic team around me as well, so they help me with making it all work out.

JL: What’s one piece of advice you plan on instilling in your children when they get older?

AB: Just be proud of who you are and be yourself.

JL: If one of your children decided to follow in your well heeled footsteps and become a designer, what advice would you give them based on your experience?

AB: Work hard and love what you are doing, be prepared. When I first started, I was packing all the boxes myself, so work hard and don’t be too good for anything.

IMG_9639JL: what is one article of clothing you cannot live without?

AB: Can I only pick one?

JL: You can pick more than one.

AB: My skinny jeans, my leather jacket and my gold studded boots.IMG_9659JL: Your skin is incredible, what are your beauty secrets?

AB: Lots of water! I try to sleep 8-9 hours a night, which is not too easy with two little ones. Just be happy and then you glow.

JL: What are five of the most important things to have in your bag at all times?

AB: iPhone, diapers because I have kids, wipes because kids always seem to get messy, sunglasses and lip gloss.

IMG_9652JL: Have you been to Vancouver before, have you had any time to do anything for yourself while you have been here?

AB: I went for dinner at Vijis, it was the most amazing indian food.

JL: Will you have any more time while you are here?

AB: No I’m leaving tonight, straight for the event in Toronto. But it’s such a beautiful city, I cannot wait to come back.

JL: What musical artist can you not stop listening to right now?

AB: I tend to go back to my old favourites, like the cranberries.

JL: It pains me to say that fall is just around the corner, so what are some of your fall staples?

AB: A good leather jacket, oversized knits which are also in my collection and a good pair of boots.

JL: Besides, instagram, twitter and facebook, what is one app you can’t live without on your iPhone?

AB: I don;t really have any other apps I’m addicted to, I love instagram.

IMG_9647JL: What is the most important thing for you to consider before uploading a photo to instagram?

AB: Make sure that the photo is good and crisp and it looks good together with the photos I posted before that.

JL: If you could describe your life right now as a #hashtag what would it be?

AB: #LoveMyLife

JL: What tips would you give someone to step up their instagram game?

AB: It’s all about the photos. You have to have an eye for it, take a lot of photos. When I upload a photo I’ll sometimes take 20 photos and choose which is the best one.

JL: You have a instagram following of over 170K on instagram. who are three people we should all be folllowing on instagram?

AB: @TheyAllHateUs – they have a blog as well as instagram, @SincerelyJules – she’s a good friend and I love her style, and @WhoWhatWear.

IMG_9649JL: As a musician and designer you are constantly creating, do you have the same creative process for both or do they differ?

AB: I think with music it’s more an emotional process, it’s honest; I just get out my emotions and write a song. For the clothing it’s a more superficial process, I make sure that everything looks good and feels good. So I can’t really compare the two processes but they are both equally fun.

IMG_9629JL: Lastly, a few quickfire questions for you.

JL: Betty or Veronica?

AB: I don’t even have a TV!

JL: Black or White?

AB: Black.

JL: Summer or Fall?

AB: Fall.

JL: The beach or The Mountains?

AB: Beach.

JL: Heels or Flats?

AB: Flats.

JL: Salty or Sweet?

AB: Salty. Dammit! Both!! I like liquorice which is both salty and sweet. I also love Nutella for breakfast. Ok I have to do sweet then.

JL: What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?

AB: Candy.

JL: Any particular candy?

AB: Swedish Candy, salty liquorice, I like having a bit of both.
