There are some finer things in life are to be savoured and to lose yourself in the exquisite pleasure of. Paul Schellenberg and I were fortunate enough to attend an exclusive tasting with the Hennessy Cognac brand ambassador from France, Jean-Michel Cochet who shared his expert knowledge and provided true insight on one of the truly finer things in life – Cognac.
The special tasting was held for a small intimate group at Dior Homme in the regal Fairmont Hotel. Jean-Michel Cochet presented three Hennessy Cognacs – Original X.O, Hennessy 250 and the Paradis Imperial. Between swirls and sips, Jean-Michel entertained cognac aficionado with timely scent notes interspersed with a thorough description of the eaux-de-vie blends, the barrelling process and personal anecdotes associated with the creation of each.
The Original Hennessy X.O was created by Maurice Hennessy in 1870 for his circle of friends, X.O was born at a turning point in history and introduced a new style of cognac: bold, rich and complex. The 100 eaux-de-vie assembled to create X.O were aged for a long time – some for 30 years – to give an unparalleled robustness. Maurice Hennessy gave the name X.O to this unique “extra old” cognac.
The Hennessy 250 Collector Blend is a distinctive cognac of exceptional blending and aging, born of the creative inspiration of Hennessy Master Blender Yann Fillioux. It is an expertly assembled blend of eaux-de-vie aged 15-35 years, selected to achieve a harmony between power, vivacity, and elegance. The blend completed its aging in ideal conditions: resting in 250 specially crafted barrels of 250 litres each, carefully stored at ground level near the banks of the river Charente.
The Paradise Imperial is an exquisitely refined and elegant blend of more than 100 eaux-de-vie, aged for a minimum of 30 years and going back to the middle of the 19th century. Inspired by the legend of an 1818 order of a unique blend of rare cognacs for Tsar Alexander I of Russia, Hennessy’s Master Blender Yann Fillioux has created Paradis Impérial in 2011.
In 2015, the Maison Hennessy celebrates 250 years of an exceptional adventure that has linked the Hennessy and Fillioux families for seven generations and spanned five continents. Hennessy’s success and longevity are also the result of the values the Maison has upheld since its creation: unique savoir-faire, a constant quest for innovation, and an unwavering commitment to Creation, Excellence, Legacy, and Sustainable Development. Today, these qualities are the hallmark of a Maison – a crown jewel in the LVMH Group – that crafts the most iconic, prestigious Cognacs.
