For their SS15 show, The Blonds took us on a magic carpet ride to a whole new world. The set design was impeccable , as we have come to expect from fashions favourite design duo and it was created by Max Steiner. Milk Studios was transformed into a middle eastern palace, complete with rows of royal subjects awaiting for the king and queen to appear on the runway. Opening the show was Phillipe Blond with his long blond hair bouncing with each Christian Louboutin clad step. The Blonds is one of the few shows I attend where you hear screams of “OOOO”, “AHHHH” and “YASSSSSSS” from the first look to the finish.
There was definitely some magic in the air, as one by one these “Ghetto Genies” hit the runway. This genie was definately given a 90’s throwback, and stomped the runway like only a true Genie from the Block could. The hair from the show was extraordinary, with one large oversized platinum braid that went all the way down to the hip. They also took pieces of the platinum hair to create the word “Blond” in a scripted font that was placed across the forehead.
For the makeup the eyes used golden liquid liner in a “up-swoosh” shape, lined with black liner to make it pop out more. My favourite detail was the golden tear drop drawn on the face with gold leaf, which referenced spanish street culture.
The collection was filled with intricate details and a lot of hand work. There were thousands of Preciosa crystal embellishments throughout the collection, adding lots of sparkle as the lights hit the garments. One of my standout pieces would be the Pink Rose corset embellished with Preciosa Crystal Components and paired with pink Chiffon harem pants that were slashed at the sides. At the cuff there were a single rose embellishment which brought everything together. My other favourite would be the “hood Jeannie” in a hooded velour track one piece with a plunging neckline, and Preciosa crystal embellished genie pants
The nails at The Blonds show are always a major focus, and their partnership with CND has created some incredible looks over the seasons.
“The ‘Gangsta Genie’ theme provided the perfect inspiration for the mash-up of the coolest tunes, street attitude and lavish looks made with sophisticated handmade craftsmanship and intricate detailing from the platinum design duo! Corsets and nails were inseparable, as THIS genie travels on her magic carpet in style!!!” – CND
It’s shows like The Blonds that really invigorate NYFW, with their celebration of colour, sparkle and most importantly, the show. After all, it’s not what you say, as much as it’s how you say it.
