Ballet BC has had a very strong season, and this weekend they have saved you the best for last. For the closing show of their season Ballet BC presents UN/A, a collaborative effort by three of the worlds top choreographers.

“Gioconda, Cayetano and Gustavo are three innovative choreographers, who promise exhilarating works that will captivate our audiences,” says Ballet BC’s Artistic Director Emily Molnar. “They all have had international success, creating and staging works for major dance companies around the world. We are thrilled to include these new works as part of Ballet BC’s repertoire.”unnamed-1

Gioconda Barbuto is a Montreal based choreographer who received the prestigious Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award in 1996. This is not her first time working with Ballet BC, she choreographed “TOUCH” in 2011, and received praise for her it’s theatricality, physicality and wit.

Gustavo Ramirez Sansano has been putting spain on the map internationally with his work, which is being called “…highly original, starkly expressionistic…emotionally fierce, sensual…riveting from start to finish”.   Ballet BC also is the first company in Canada to collaborate on a piece with the notable choreographer.

The last Choreographer is the spanish born Cayetano Soto, who is quickly rising as one of the hottest talents in 21st century Ballet. His resume is quite impressive, working with some of the most esteemed ballet companies including Royal Ballet of Flanders, Stuttgart Ballet, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and Ballet Theater Munich.

“To make choreography you have to be like an architect. I think you have to have a very strong structure [and know] what you want to talk about … What I feel, more and more, is that whatever is happening in my pieces is related to me … and what is happening in the moment.” –  Cayetano Soto

Ballet BC has surely raised the bar with this impressive trio of choreographers, proving they are an unstoppable force in the Vancouver arts scene. With only two shows left, tonight and tomorrow, you should probably cancel your plans and get tickets. I can attest from seeing most of their shows this season, they consistently surpass all expectations and give you an evening you will never forget.
