Public School has been making major waves since they began in 2008. By 2010 they had been selected by the CFDA to be a part of their Fashion Incubator program, which assists designers in establishing their business model. Impressively they were the only menswear brand to receive this honour, and by 2013 Public School has became a household name. In June they received the 2013 CFDA Swarovski Award for menswear, and by November 2013 they were one of the ten finalists for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. They ended up securing the win which would provide them mentoring from fashion industry professionals. This assisted them on further developing their business model, marketing, sourcing, production and exporting, as well as provided them $300,000 to use towards growing their business.
J. Crew as one of the title sponsors gives the winners [Public School] and the two runners up [Juan Carlos Obando, and Marc Alary] the opportunity to design a capsule collection to be sold at J. Crew. While the designs have already been made available online on pre-sale for the last couple weeks, J. Crew has sweetened the pot this year by hosting a 24 hour pop-up at their Prince st store in NYC. Tomorrow [Thursday June 12th] the pop-up will be made available to the public who are looking to score a piece from this collaborative capsule collection. Between the 3 brands there will be a total of 19 pieces available, with a large portion of the pieces being designed by the winning dynamic duo at Public School.
“We felt like it was a great idea,” said Tom Mora, J. Crew’s vice president of women’s design to WWD, each collection “feels true” to the designer who created it.
The 3 designers were given the theme of indigo to center their design around. For the capsule Public School is focusing on womenswear, something they introduced last season at NYFW and received glorious reviews on their first collection of womenswear. Public Schools collection is as we can expect, a fantastic homage to NY, the city where it all began and continues to thrive. My favourite pieces include the Public School for J. Crew Earliblaze Vest, The Public School for J. Crew Love PS Boys Tank and Public School for J. Crew Jeffries Tuxedo Jacket.
If you are looking to grab a piece from the collections you better hurry because according to Mora, some pieces are already nearly sold out!
